I don't really know where this is going ... if anywhere.

On the suggestion of a few friends, I have tried the deconstruction procedure I use on mold on a weevil. I have the same issue here that I do with the mold. It is hard, no matter what art speak I use to justify my actions, to see this process as anything but a gimmick. Though on the other hand, it is hard to see a simple good shot of an insect as anything but banal. This is where all that training just gets in the way. Without it, I would just take photos. Instead, I need to do more than that and give reason to it.

Though I understand what you are trying to say but dictionary.com says that a gimmick is
1. an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, esp. one designed to attract attention or increase appeal

For your own purposes there are a few things to consider. There is the idea that discontentment is what really drives us as creatures. the desire for better or more. To be happy with your product might be the worst thing. However it does not man there isn't room for a certain measure of satisfaction.

The gimmick thing though is a sense that you are cheating or not really doing the work somehow. what though isn't a gimmick? The contrast of yellow on black is a way to achieve and effect for example, its easy and and old thing. Does that mean it is out of bounds? No I think not. There are cases where people just try to make a quick and fast impression without any true desire for expression or creation. Even that I think is not wrong. You just have standards and a desire not to be crass or lazy.

Here I think is the rub for you. There is the need to explore and alter. poking and prodding something to both understand what it is as well as to change it. The reason why those painting programs are so great is that you can try something with out commitment. Simply hit undo or backstep. However that is the long way around to not doing anything.

It seems though that you are dissatisfied with the trying the same thing on a new subject. Let me say that being unhappy with something is as legit with liking it. Don't think it isn't. You need to figure out the next step. This may be moving on or doing more with the same. New venues for the patterns, increased complexity or a different way to express it.

As I try to do for myself don't forget to just goof around and not try so hard to get somewhere.

hmmmmmm
hope that isn't all too pompous.
